Patenga is Chattogram's city beach, 14 km south of the centre where the Karnaphuli meets the Bay of Bengal, next to Shah Amanat airport and the Bangladesh Naval Academy. Concrete sea walls and rock barriers built after the 1991 cyclone have replaced most of the sand, so it is a sunset promenade rather than a swimming beach: speedboats, horse rides, the Burmese market and fried-crab stalls, with the anchored ships of the port on the horizon.

November, December, January, February
November to February is dry with clear skies, clean sunsets over the Bay and a gentle sea breeze, before the pre-monsoon heat and haze set in.
Weather caution
June-September brings Chattogram's heavy monsoon rain and a rough, murky sea with no bathing off the rocks; cyclone seasons April-May and October-November hit this coast directly (the 1991 cyclone made landfall here), so check BMD signals before heading out.

Intercity trains from Kamalapur (Sonar Bangla, Subarna, Mahanagar, Turna) reach Chattogram in 5-6 hours, buses take 6-8, and flights land at Shah Amanat airport right beside the beach; from the city centre it is 14 km, 30-60 minutes by CNG or bus along Airport Road.
