Kaptai Lake: best time to visit and today's weather
lake · Rajasthali, Rangamati
Updated: Monday, 7 September 2026
Bangladesh's largest man-made lake was created between 1956 and 1961 when the Kaptai Dam closed the Karnaphuli for the country's only hydropower station, flooding roughly 688 sq km of Rangamati's hill valleys. Wooden boats from Rangamati's Reserve Bazar ghat and from Kaptai run to Shuvolong waterfall, the hanging bridge and hill-top viewpoints. The coordinate is the Wikipedia infobox point near the dam in Kaptai upazila; the lake itself stretches north through Rangamati Sadar, Barkal and beyond.
Best time to visit
October, November, December, January, February
After the monsoon (October-November) the lake is brim-full, the hills are green and Shuvolong still flows; the winter months bring calm water and clear skies, ideal for boat trips. By March-May the water level drops sharply.
Weather caution
June-September monsoon means heavy rain, landslides on the Chattogram-Rangamati and Kaptai roads (the June 2017 Rangamati landslides killed over a hundred people), and sudden squalls that make open wooden boats risky. April-May brings kalboishakhi (nor'wester) storms; March-May low water limits boating, and Shuvolong dries to a trickle in winter.
