Tanguar Haor is a Ramsar wetland of roughly 100 sq km spread across Tahirpur and Madhyanagar (formerly Dharmapasha) upazilas of Sunamganj, with the Meghalaya hills along its northern rim; it is Bangladesh's second-largest freshwater wetland, home to 140-plus fish species and over 200 birds. In monsoon it becomes an open sea dotted with submerged hijal and koroch trees and houseboats; in winter the water drops and migratory ducks arrive. Tahirpur is the usual gateway.

From June to September runoff from the Meghalaya hills fills the haor to the brim and it turns into an open sea with submerged hijal-koroch forest and moonlit nights, the only season houseboats run; Dec-Jan is birding season when the water is low and migratory ducks arrive, but houseboat access is limited.
Weather caution
Open water in monsoon brings sudden storms, lightning and big waves (afal); in July 2026 the Sunamganj administration declared haor navigation risky and required life jackets on houseboats, and in June 2022 hundreds of tourists were stranded by a flash flood. Kalboishakhi nor'westers hit in April-May; Dec-Jan brings dense morning fog and cold nights on the water.

Getting there from Dhaka
Bus from Dhaka (Fakirapool or Sayedabad; Shyamoli, Hanif, Mamun) to Sunamganj, 6-7 h, then CNG, motorbike or shared microbus to Tahirpur (1.5 h) and an engine boat or houseboat into the haor; in monsoon houseboats also sail directly from Sunamganj's Sahebbari ghat.
