Lalakhal is a stretch of the Sari river in Jaintiapur, just below the Cherrapunji hills, where mineral-rich water over a sandy bed turns blue, turquoise and glass-clear in different reaches. Tea gardens and betel-nut groves line the banks and the Meghalaya hills close the view upstream. The boat trip up from Sarighat is the point of the visit, and the colour is at its deepest in the winter sun.

Once the monsoon stops, the silt in the Sari settles and the dry-season sun brings out the turquoise and emerald the place is known for; in monsoon the river runs brown and swollen and the colour disappears.

Weather caution

In monsoon (Jun-Sep) Meghalaya runoff turns the Sari brown and swollen and boat trips become risky; Lalakhal was among the Sylhet spots shut during the May-June 2024 flood. Dense fog on Dec-Jan mornings can delay boats from Sarighat.

Getting there from Dhaka

Bus, train or flight from Dhaka to Sylhet (6-7 h by road), then a bus or CNG along the Sylhet-Tamabil highway to Sarighat (about 42 km, 1.5 h) and an engine boat 40-60 min up the Sari river to Lalakhal; a hired microbus can also drive straight to the Lalakhal ghat.
