Birishiri: best time to visit and today's weather
hill station · Durgapur, Netrokona
Updated: Monday, 7 September 2026
Birishiri is a border village in Durgapur, Netrokona, across the Someshwari River from Durgapur town, where Garo, Hajong and Bengali communities live side by side. The Someshwari (Simsang to the Garo) comes down from the Garo Hills of Meghalaya with clear water and sandy banks, and 7 km away at Bijoypur the white and reddish china clay (kaolin) hills hold a blue-green lake that became a full-time tourist spot after mining stopped by court order in 2016. The Tribal Cultural Academy, Ranikhong mission and Kamalarani dighi round out a two-day trip.
Best time to visit
October, November, December, January, February
Right after the rains (October-November) the Someshwari still carries water, the hills are green and the clay-pit lake is at its bluest, then winter brings dry walkable trails, comfortable temperatures and easy boat crossings; travellers who want the river in full flood can go in the monsoon but should accept the risks below.
Weather caution
The Someshwari is a hill river that rises within hours when it rains in Meghalaya: June-September flash floods can suspend boat crossings and cut the Durgapur roads, so check the forecast before a monsoon trip. In December-January dense fog hides the hills until late morning, and in the dry season the shrunken river and sand-and-coal trucks make the crossings dusty.
