Bichnakandi: best time to visit and today's weather
river · Gowainghat, Sylhet
Updated: Monday, 7 September 2026
Bichnakandi sits in Bichnakandi union of Gowainghat, where the Piyain river enters Bangladesh at the foot of Meghalaya's Khasi hills and spreads a bed of boulders and pebbles across the stream. Waterfalls hang on the Indian slopes just across the border and the hills stay wrapped in cloud through the rains. It is a 20-30 minute engine-boat ride from Hadarpar bazar and is usually combined with Panthumai falls and Ratargul swamp forest.
Best time to visit
June, July, August, September
Monsoon rain on the Meghalaya side sends clear hill water racing over the stone bed, the Khasi slopes opposite run with waterfalls and the peaks sit in cloud; by winter the stream shrinks to a trickle and stone-lifting boats and lorries take over the site.
Weather caution
Flash floods: heavy rain in Meghalaya sends sudden hill runoff down the Piyain, mostly in June-July; the administration closed Bichnakandi along with Jaflong, Ratargul, Panthumai and Lalakhal during the May-June 2024 flood. Currents are strong and the stones slippery in monsoon, so check upstream rain and closure notices before setting out, and note the border area is off-limits to tourists after 6 pm.
