Niladri Lake (officially Shahid Siraj Lake) is a flooded limestone quarry at Tekerghat, hard against the Meghalaya border in Tahirpur, Sunamganj: turquoise water with small hillocks in it and green hills rising straight behind. About 7 km east along the Jadukata river at Manigaon is Shimul Bagan (25.1780, 91.2486), where some 3,000 silk-cotton trees planted in 2002 turn red in Feb-Mar with the Meghalaya hills across the water. In monsoon the lake fills to the brim and the area is reached by boat through Tanguar Haor; in winter and spring it is a motorbike ride from Tahirpur.

Two windows: Feb-Mar for the shimul bloom, dry roads and crisp views of the Meghalaya hills; Jul-Sep when the lake and the Jadukata are brim-full, the hills are at their greenest and the boat route through Tanguar Haor is open.
Weather caution
Sunamganj's haor belt floods fast when Meghalaya gets heavy rain: Jun-Jul flash floods can cut roads for days, and pre-monsoon lightning (Apr-Jun) is a real hazard on open water. The quarry lake is deep with sudden drop-offs, so no swimming for non-swimmers, and it sits on the border, so keep back from the pillars. Dec-Jan mornings are foggy, and the Jadukata is a fast river in monsoon.

Getting there from Dhaka
Night coach from Dhaka (Sayedabad or Mohakhali) to Sunamganj, 6-7 h; then CNG/laguna or a hired motorbike from the Surma bridge to Tahirpur (about 1.5 h) and on by motorbike to Tekerghat, or across the Jadukata ferry to Shimul Bagan, another hour. In monsoon, hire a boat from Tahirpur through Tanguar Haor to Tekerghat (3-4 h).
