Jaflong: best time to visit and today's weather
river · Gowainghat, Sylhet
Updated: Monday, 7 September 2026
A riverside spot 56–62 km northeast of Sylhet at the foot of Meghalaya's Khasi hills, where the Dawki river enters Bangladesh as the Piyain and spreads over a bed of rolling stones. Zero Point on the border looks up at the Dawki suspension bridge and the wooded hills; the water runs glass-clear in winter and brown and violent in the monsoon, with Khasi punjis, betel-leaf and orange gardens and the Jaflong tea garden around it. Stone collection from the riverbed remains the main local livelihood.
Best time to visit
November, December, January, February
November to February is dry: the Piyain runs clear and calm so the stone bed shows through, the sky is clear enough to see the Meghalaya hills sharply, and the Zero Point boats operate freely; October is a fine shoulder month while the greenery is still full.
Weather caution
Flash floods: rain on the Cherrapunji–Mawsynram side of Meghalaya reaches Jaflong through the Piyain within hours — on 19–20 May 2025 Zero Point was submerged and tourism suspended after 169 mm fell on Sylhet in six hours. Treat April–May pre-monsoon storms and the June–September monsoon as high-risk; old quarry pits make the river unexpectedly deep, so non-swimmers should stay out of the water.
