Nijhum Dwip is a low, keora-mangrove island off the southern tip of Hatiya in the Meghna estuary, declared a national park in 2001 and ringed by a marine protected area since 2019. It is known for the herds of spotted deer released with the 1970s afforestation, its silent forest paths and beaches, and the winter flocks of migratory birds on the mudflats. Only about 38 km2 of the 163 km2 park is land; the rest is river and sea.
Best time to visit
November, December, January, February
November to February is dry with a calm Meghna estuary, firm ground in the forest for deer-spotting, and the peak of the migratory-bird season.
Weather caution
June-September the estuary and sea are rough and the island turns to knee-deep mud; in cyclone seasons (April-May, October-November) trawlers stop on BMD signals and can leave you stranded; dense December-January fog delays launches on the Meghna.
