Char Kukri-Mukri is the southernmost island of Bhola, a char that rose around 1912 in the Meghna mouth, was planted with mangroves in 1973-74 and now holds a 40-hectare wildlife sanctuary (declared 1981) inside a much larger keora, gewa and golpata forest. It draws birders for its eight breeding heron species, egrets, kingfishers and winter migrants, plus deer, monitor lizards and otters; much of the shoreline is mudflat that floods twice a day. The wide Tarua sea beach lies at its southern edge.
Best time to visit
November, December, January, February
November to February is dry, the Tetulia and the Bay are calm for the crossing, the mudflats are walkable, and migratory birds peak in December-January.
Weather caution
June-September monsoon makes the Tetulia and the Bay rough and the mudflats impassable; the island sits in the path of Bay cyclones (April-May, October-November) and was wiped out by the 1970 cyclone, so check BMD signals before boarding a trawler; expect December-January fog on the river.

Getting there from Dhaka
Overnight launch from Dhaka Sadarghat to Betua ghat (Char Fasson, Bhola), then bus or auto via Char Fasson and Dakshin Aicha to Char Kachchapia ghat, and a public trawler (around 9 AM and 12 PM) or reserved boat across the Tetulia river to the island; allow most of a day.
