Lawachara National Park: best time to visit and today's weather
forest · Kamalganj, Moulvibazar
Updated: Monday, 7 September 2026
A 1,250-hectare patch of semi-evergreen forest inside the West Bhanugach Reserved Forest, 8 km from Sreemangal and declared a national park in 1996. It is the best-known refuge of the endangered western hoolock gibbon (a 2007 census found 62 animals in 17 groups), alongside Phayre's leaf monkey, capped langur and slow loris, with the Dhaka–Sylhet railway line cutting straight through the trees. Three marked trails are walked with forest guides, and a Khasi punji sits on a hillock inside the park.
Best time to visit
November, December, January, February
November to February is dry and cool (Lawachara averages 26.8 °C in February against 36.1 °C in June): trails are firm and leech-free, and the gibbons' dawn calls carry in the clear, still winter air.
Weather caution
June–September brings near-daily heavy rain: trails turn to slippery mud and leeches are everywhere, so the walks are miserable. December–January dawns in the Sreemangal tea belt can be foggy, delaying wildlife viewing until mid-morning; from March the heat and humidity climb fast.
