Mahasthangarh: best time to visit and today's weather
heritage site · Bogura, Bogura
Updated: Monday, 7 September 2026
Mahasthangarh, 12 km north of Bogura on the Rangpur highway, is the oldest city site in Bangladesh: the ramparts of Pundranagara, capital of the ancient Pundra kingdom, date to at least the 3rd century BC. The fortified citadel measures about 1.5 km by 1.4 km, with the site museum, the mazar of Shah Sultan Balkhi and, 3 km south, the terraced mound of Gokul Medh (Behular Bashor). It is open farmland and mounds, so plan around sun and fog.
Best time to visit
November, December, January, February
Nov-Feb is dry and cool for climbing the mounds and walking the 1.5 km rampart; the site has almost no shade and Bogura's Apr-May afternoons run 36-38 C.
Weather caution
Dec-Jan fog on the Bogura-Rangpur highway slows morning traffic and hides the view from the ramparts until about 10 am. Apr-May kalbaishakhi squalls and lightning are dangerous on the open mounds, and in monsoon (Jun-Sep) the earthen paths turn to mud and the low ground around the fort waterlogs.
