Kantajew Temple: best time to visit and today's weather
heritage site · Kaharole, Dinajpur
Updated: Monday, 7 September 2026
Kantajew (Kantanagar) Temple, 20 km north of Dinajpur town in Kaharole upazila, is the finest terracotta temple in Bangladesh: begun by Maharaja Pran Nath in 1704 and finished by his son Ramnath in 1752 in the navaratna style, dedicated to Krishna and Rukmini. Its walls carry some 15,000 terracotta plaques of the epics and 18th-century Bengal; the nine spires fell in the 1897 earthquake and were never rebuilt. The month-long Rash Mela from the Kartik full moon (November) fills the fields around it.
Best time to visit
November, December, January, February
Nov-Feb is dry with soft light on the terracotta and mild days for the long journey north; November adds the Rash Mela. The far north is hot and humid from April and rain-soaked Jun-Sep.
Weather caution
Dinajpur gets the country's densest fog in Dec-Jan: the Dinajpur-Thakurgaon highway can be near zero visibility before 10 am, Dhaka-Dinajpur trains run hours late and Saidpur flights get cancelled; cold-wave nights drop below 8 C. In monsoon (Jun-Sep) the terracotta plinth is slippery and the temple grounds and village lanes flood after heavy rain.
