Somapura Mahavihara at Paharpur is the largest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalaya, built by the Pala king Dharmapala in the late 8th century and inscribed by UNESCO in 1985. A quadrangle of 177 monks' cells encloses a cruciform central shrine, its terraces lined with terracotta plaques of everyday Bengal. The site is open ground with little shade, so the weather decides how long you can walk it.

Nov-Feb is dry and cool, the only comfortable window for walking an unshaded brick site; from March the sun is fierce and Apr-May afternoons pass 38 C.
Weather caution
Dec-Jan brings dense fog across the northern districts: early trains and buses run hours late and the site stays grey until mid-morning, so plan a late-morning visit. Apr-May pre-monsoon heat and kalbaishakhi squalls hit an open site hard, and monsoon rain (Jun-Sep) leaves the brick terraces slippery and the approach roads muddy.

Getting there from Dhaka
Coach from Dhaka (Gabtoli/Kallyanpur; Shyamoli, Hanif, SR) to Naogaon, 6-7 h, then a local bus from Baludanga terminal 32 km to Paharpur (about 1 h); or a Dinajpur/Panchagarh-bound intercity train from Kamalapur to Joypurhat (6-7 h) and the last 9 km by bus or CNG. Jamalganj station is 4.5 km from the site if your train stops there.
